Waterfalls

of 

North Georgia

 

Amicalola Falls - Amicalola means "tumbling waters," in the native Cherokee language. It is also a very beautiful large cascade.   This fall is officially recognized as the highest waterfall in Georgia.  The dramatic path in the park is the 1/4 mile hike to the base of the falls.

Directions - Located 20 miles west of Dahlonega on Ga Hwy 52.

Anna Ruby Falls - The most heavily visited waterfall in Georgia with a twin cascade. Formed as Curtis and York Creeks combine to form Smith Creek. A paved .4 mile trail leads from the picnic area and visitor center to the lovely waterfall.

Directions - From Helen, take Ga Hwy 75 N for 1 mile, turn right onto Hwy 356, go 1.4 miles, then left onto FS242 for 3.6 miles, parking fee required.

Cane Creek Falls - On the grounds of Camp Glisson, a United Methodist facility, closed to the public when camp is in session, lies this wide 30 foot water cascade.

Directions - Go north from Dahlonega on Ga 60 Business spur for 2 miles, turn left onto Cane Creek Road and proceed .8 of a mile to the falls parking area on the right.

Desota Falls - This is a highly scenic area and numerous small waterfalls are located here. It is .8 walk to middle falls and a 2.5 mile walk to upper falls which is easy until the last half which is more steep and rugged. Spanish armor was found years after 1500 when DeSoto came through the area.

Directions - About 15 miles north of Cleveland on Hwy 129, 4.2 miles north of Turner's corner.

Dukes Creek Falls - A steep one mile trail descends into 250 foot waterfall from Davis Creek which merges with Duke's Creek at the base.

Directions - Go to Hwy 75 Alt/Hwy 348 intersection, proceed 2 miles north on 348 to the parking area and long range viewing.

Estatoah Falls - Located on private property, doesn't allow a close view. The fall tumbles hundreds of feet over rugged cascades.

Directions - North on Ga Hwy 246 until you are around a mile from the 441 intersection. Look to the right of the road.

Helton Creek Falls - One of the most beautiful waterfalls has a 60 foot cascade, complete with a steep natural waterslide into a pool, then a 30 foot cascade.

Directions - From Neel's Gap on Hwy 19/129, go north 1.6 miles, turn right on Helton Creek Road FS118 for 2.3 miles. It is an easy several hundred yards.

High Shoals and Blue Hole Falls - In Towns county near Unicoi Gap lie two major waterfalls surrounded by beautiful rhododendrons which usually peak into bloom around late May. High Shoals is around 100 feet of cascades and Blue Hole Falls is around 30 feet of sheer cascade drops into a wide, deep plunge pool. There is an observation deck for safer viewing. There have been numerous fatalities at these falls. Proceed with care!

Directions - Take Ga Hwy 75 north from Helen for 11 miles and turn right on FS 283 (Indian Grave Gap Road), proceed 1.3 miles of bumpy road by a shallow stream uphill to the parking area on the left.

Horse Trough Falls - This 75 foot waterfall with a 6o foot cascade is found close to the river headwaters of the Chattahoochee River.

Directions - Take Ga 75 north for 8 miles above Helen, turn left on FS 44 and proceed 4.8 miles to the Upper Chattahoochee Campground on the right, the falls are .2 of a mile from the parking area.

Little Rock Creek Falls - This 30 foot cascade is powerful and beautiful. The walk is brief and rugged.  You will find beauty, but it is a tough venture. It is also not  safe for children or careless visitors. 

Directions - From Hwy 180 and 60 intersection in Suches, go North for 11.8 miles, turn left onto FS 69 and proceed 3.3 miles to Little Rock Creek Bridge. You can park there and proceed up the bank on the east side of the road.

Waters Creek Falls - Several low broadwater waterfalls along the creek can be viewed from the road.

Directions - From Turner's corner follow US Hwy 19 south for .5 mile to Dick's Creek Road (FS 34), go one mile to the recreation area. Proceed along the road for a scenic drive.
